I have little knowledge, as yet, of Dr Wayne Dwyer, but, I thought I would add a comment on this thread, to share my own experiences with you.
Listening with your body, just means, using your mental sense of touch, to physically connect with your body.
If I were to say to you, become aware of your left pinkie finger, you would suddenly feel
a warmth in this area. If you do this with your whole body, your body will reveal to you, via the uncomfortable feelings, emotions you hold inside of you.
If you stay with your body, I have found that new perspectives and insights are often revealed to you.
When the discomfort bits come up, feel them fully, and be receptive.

We, in my opinion, do not need to immerse ourselves in unpleasant situations.
What is important is the feeling behind these situations.
For instance, you could practice the mental sense of touch, mentioned above, and bring your situation with your family to awareness.
You body, via the uncomfortable feelings that come up, will show to you, your own feelings, that you may not consciously be aware of, but may be, unconsciously influencing you life in a negative way, purely by their absence from consciousness.
When we become consciously aware of discomfort, something happens, in that it dissolves and there is a release of energy. Energy to be channeled into a more healthier way, of being with the uncomfortable situations.
I have practiced this when faced with uncomfortable situations. It has been a valuable help in keeping me that bit more grounded.
It may take a few goes, until all of the trapped emotional energy is released and worked through. This is the 'moving through' rather than 'away from' discomfort.
The outside manifestations are only a reflection of our inner feelings.
This way, also, you are not being avoidant, because you are facing what matters, not the outside appearance, but the feelings inside you.
It is these feelings which are reflected outwards.
I dont see my family, because I dont feel, that me, or they, are in an emotionally healthy enough place to interact without causeing some toxicity.
I intend for this rift to evolve, but I can only change my feelings and they must discover for themselves, a new perspective. If they dont, then if I have moved through my own inner negatives, (not by denying them) but by listening to my body, and not avoiding the uncomfortable feelings which arise, then any future meeting with them in the physical realm, regardless of where they are at with things, will not be harmful to me, and will not trigger me to respond negatively to them.
I hope this makes sense.
Its how we feel, that is the only important thing to us.
Listening to the body, using our mental sense of touch, to me, is a way of metaphorically conquering the dragon, and becoming one with it, that is because, to me, we are that dragon.

This is my individual view, and I do not profess expertise, but this way feels right for me.

I wrote this post before reading Deepak's reply, because I did not want to repeat
or confuse.
Deepaks answer to me, implies fully facing the messages of the body, and using the most accurate guide, intuition and feeling.
