i wonder several things... maybe, if one is confronted by such fears in doing such things, that possibly their spirit is telling them they are not ready for such things yet. maybe they are still in a preparation phase for later growth. or, that it's not the road they necessarily need to go down at this time, maybe their feelings are important/a red flag and will contribute to the learning process at a later time when all the peices will fall together perfectly. it seems to me, the best type of growth would come from breaking out of a box not putting oneself into one by having to only use such-n-such mantra. think as in freedom to grow. maybe this primordial sound/mantra suggested by the "teacher" was not the right one for him. maybe we ourselves truly are the ones who know what is right for us at certain times. can we really force spiritual growth? (rhetorical) maybe he had to go thru this experience with the "teacher" in order to learn that he can make such choices for himself. aren't there many mantras/many different sounds in the universe? and, couldn't he try one that was pleasing to him rather than one which brings on fear?

A real mantra or mantrum is unique in that it leads one inwards rather than outwards. If the mantra you have is authentic it will have this effect of leading you inwards to your true self. Regular sounds of our thoughts and feelings all lead outwards into the world.

There is no hell greater or more terrifying then the one we inhabit currently and globally.
My sense is that God, sometimes pretends to be a "very bad boy" to get our attention;
as in being: the "Merry Prankster" figure Native Americans are aware of.
I know my own evil too well and have, more-or-less, harnessed it. Some will disagree but
I need not attend their opinions too closely . . . I'd rather have God define my worth or
unworthiness for life and love now in every minute and breath; and at the time of my death.
Although a Protestant I was taught by Mercy Sisters to embrace several traditions--or ways to
God; the Author of all Religions and Spirituality = no boarders.
In a modest and humble way, a prayer of sorts, everyday I click for various causes. At one Literacy site
I discovered a stone "Nearly flat stone is cool and smooth to the touch, and a perfect backdrop for this classic symbol engraved in black upon its surface. The Sanskrit word om literally means "everything." It is considered to be the most sacred of all syllables, the greatest of all the mantras, the sound of the universe. The open semicircle can be symbolic of the infinite and of intuitive thinking."
I am weeping for the joy of discovering it as I write these words.
Be Peace, Justice and Love to all but especially yourself whoever you are: Trust God.
