In one of his books Dr. Chopra says (not exactly, I am very humbly and very loosely paraphrasing, but the central idea is clear) that when we pray we may call upon the archetypes or archetypal mythical figures to manifest themselves into our lives. Not literally, come into our lives, but what he meant (I think was), to pick archetypes archetypes whose strengths you identify with and want in your life to request them to manifest themselves into your life.
So for eg: One may pray to Jesus and pray to him to manifest himself and his patience and strength into my life. Atleast this is how I do it. But I don't think there is any wron way to pray. He/She listens to all languages, voices and pitches. Peaceful or angry, happy or sad, complaining to Him/Her or thanking Him/Her
