We have a choice, we can either try to be spiritual (i.e. try to be aware of that something that cannot be perceived by our senses) or not. Whatever path we choose is our destiny. Karma, past-life sins, destiny are not fantacies or a refuge in my opinion. One can either believe in them or not. Not believing in them does not nesserarily make one a bad person. Every soul has the right to believe in whatever it wishes, so long as we are not causing harm to someone else with our beliefs.

Man seeks refuge or escapes into many worlds of fantasy. Karma, past life sins, destiny---these are all concepts, which have been told to us. We personally have no contact or experience of karma, of past life, of rebirths. What we do know, however, is the reality of this life. If the reality today is that someone is sick, then that reality needs to be tackled in the best possible manner. Sitting back and saying that is is fated, it is karma, is only a form of escapism, akin to taking alcohol or a drug, so that we can disconnect from reality. Do what must be done in the real world as it exists for us now, and forget about all the fantasy that has been told to us. Life is enhanced by facing the facts, not by seeking various escape routes.
