Deepak - I'd agree that each of us has a unique purpose to fulfil in this life. Some find it quickly; others struggle for years to discover it; some never seem to. Finding a way to do what you enjoy while serving others with your skills and abilities is the way many arrive at a place of peace in life. Interestingly, your questionner asked about purpose having come from a church context. This brings a new dimension into focus. For anyone with a belief in spirituality or religion then the ultimate purpose would logically be to know their God and live in accordance with their spiritual values. Jesus seemed to sum up our main purpose in life in just four words: "Love God, love others". If we do that we do well. As for our work/career, as long as we can see it is worthwhile it is worth doing. When we lose the sense of our worthwhileness of work it is time to seriously consider a change. Look for something that is more in line with your own values. Seek to find that inner peace in your soul. This will guide you in your search for purpose.

I was also worried about this and even read "The Purpose-driven life." Then I was suddenly thrust into a career pathway that I had never imagined and it satisfied all my needs of 'purpose'. However, ironically, now I feel that the obsession with purpose is silly. Everything you do has meaning, whether you are a care-giver for a sick relative, a store clerk or a celebrity. For me, it took getting a "purpose" to understand that!
