I’ve been a student of Connie Kaplan’s dream teachings for the last 12 years, and her approach has made me at ease with the presence of deep dreaming in everyday life. I think in midlife we begin to open up to deeper dimensions of ourselves that are just waiting for our attention. Opening to deeper dreaming can be provoked by something as profound as the death of a family member or friend, or something as simple as spiritual writings that carry the energies of other dimensions, as Deepak’s books do. When dreaming opens us up in a big way, it can be quite disconcerting, surprising or even shocking. But truly it is really a normal part of being a spiritual being in a human body. Don’t worry about the why, just let yourself be as you are and work with the dreaming as it comes. It is your truest friend.

Deepak is right about it running in the family. My entire life has been filled with experiences that people call “prophetic, psychic, etc”. The 1st question my biological-mother asked me when we first met (I was 28) was “do you experience ESP?”. She said it runs in the family. My interpretation of this reality has changed over the years. At this point in the journey I believe that people like us have a “thinner veil” between the part of our being that exists beyond time and space and the developed idea of “self” which tends to see itself in time and space. In reality we all exist over a spectrum that is simultaneously in time and non-time, space and non-space. My only advice would be to allow yourself to go deep within regularly and realize that you are not simply your memory and experiences but everything and nothing. If you get impressions that are dark and disturbing try not to be afraid of them since it really is just the part of your being that’s in non-space-time communicating with you. And also, try not to rush to a conclusion as to what the impressions may or not mean; allow your intuition to process at its own pace which your body will just know.

I’ve been teaching talented dreamers how to hone their skills for over twenty years. One key is to watch the lunar influences. We tend to dream prophetically at different times of the month, specific to our body’s relationship to the phase of the moon. Each person is different, so you have to track your own patterns. Ditto with other types of dreams: psychological, shamanic, healing, soul, etc. It’s a wonderful ability, to dream the future. It’s like Deepak’s wizard in The Return of Merlin – living backwards in time!
