I think labels like 'selfishness' put pressure, and moreover, it's subjective - depending on the person's view. I too feel that unless we are true to our own selves and take care of what's important to us, we cannot be there for others in a fuller, more positive way, and yet, we also have to learn to manage others expectations, and find a certain balance. However, sometimes, we just have to choose and communicate gently with others about our wishes. I found what Deepak said, very insightful. That we can reach a place where both are one. I really hope for that to happen.

agree from my direct experience :) But sometime feel challenging to balance 5(with 3kids,1 partner) individuals in one house, especially when I feel Not clear about what matters most. Thank you.

Very true. There are two theories according to me. One, where you find happiness in keeping others happy & the other is, if you yourself aren't happy within, how can you spread happiness to people who matter !

I have recognized that when I do the thing that is optimal for myself, others benefit in an immense way. If we take care of ourselves, we have better qualities to offer other people. If we focus on ourselves enough to develop self-respect, inner-trust, etc. we bestow it to other people.

I'd say, if your self desires hurt or take from others, indeed that is a PROBLEM! If the desire for self provides more presence, more ability to give, it serves.

For example, a father that realized he ought to go away for the weekend, to a cabin alone, to meditate and re-connect with his purpose is truly serving his family. To hang around, burned out, agitated, lost, does his family a dis-service.

So, which self has the desire? Ego, the false self, with it's animal instincts, or the self of spirit which desires to serve the world in love?
