This may sound impossible, but nothing really is, as it is known, emotions and thoughts effect the body. I was diagnosed with dyslexia at age 6. At age six my parents were already divorced, no presence from them and i was away from them. Sent a continent away at age 6. This to me at the time did not sink in, my young mind was not strong enough to deal with it. (now I understand the workings behind the scenes, but i didn't back then) So I had dyslexia, and I had to wake very early, go to a tutoring session of kaligraphy. I was so tired of these, tired of not being able to at least be with my friends, that one day I realized, i wasn't thinking of what was asked of me, but rather all of these and wondering where and what might my parents be doing. At that moment, thank God I thought "either you screw up again for not focusing or concentrate and take the weigh off" All of this possible thanks to loving teachers, and my grandma. (despite the obvious emotional projection I had on my mind) and well, I no longer have dyslexia:) I am rather good at languages. Dyslexia can be cured, I think it is a very intense state of mind however*

I can appreciate all the suggestions given thus far but one suggestion that hasn't been given yet, is to first find out whether this nine year old has a visual problem. Oftentimes we mistake an adversion towards reading as laziness or lack of interest when in fact many so-called "delinquent children" actually have trouble seeing up close. For example, a far-sighted person may see distance very well but can't see clearly up close. The next step might be to have him tested for dyslexia if the near vision is good. Finally, if reading skills are not problematic, then work on behavior.

I heard this approach the other day and was delighted by it and its simplicity. Perhaps suggest that your son read to a pet animal. I work with autistic children and horses and it is miraculous what can achieved through the natural bond between humans and animals. Just a thought to add to the mix!

I like the advise U* gave Deepak. Our eldest son who is now 37, & who tested positive for dyslexia, [back in the day, which interfered w/ his enjoyment to learn to read]; The approach we "all" used was w/ his love for his pet cat. He read everything we could find, all about cats. He is now an educator w/ a masters degree. He teaches PE & Health, & is married w/ two children. He loves his job working w/ high school students, which makes us very happy. Yes, we are proud of all that he overcame. Love & positive thinking, was always the key.

Love & Peace Always,
