@Melody - it is not the scientific method which is at fautlt here. It is precisely as Deepak points out our 'addiction to silver bullets' which causes us (and above all our institutions) to ignore or overlook the most important aspect of the scientific method: Reproducibility. I know it's tempting to blame science when big pharma / the health industry screws up, but it is more accurate to regard these problems as sociological disconnects, the mass-adoption of cognitive biases or failures of the market.
In general I think the biggest error made by western medecine is to overemphasise the importance of pharmaceuticals, at the expense of more 'human' solutions (such as exercise or psychotherapy). These are harder to sell, and harder to control, so they are too often second choices, or not offered at all. We also see the trend of drug companies conspiring to make perfectly ordinary moods (such as melancholy) into sicknesses which need treatment with drugs - available at cost, of course. It is instructive to pay close attention to the long history of mass delusions, and to see how often 'common sense' is revealed to be false. This is very well-documented, and and it is rather humbling to remember that these mass delusions are no less common today.

Deepak:
Aren't there some other factors? For example, there are different cycles in Hinduism called YUGAS. These account for effectiveness of food and medicine. The first yuga, we get 100% effectiveness, the second we get 75%, the third is 50% and the last one is 25%. If I am not mistaken we are on the last Yuga. The human body is getting less nourishment from the foods we eat.

Thank-you for sharing this. Indeed it is true yet we still rely on the primitive scientific method, which no doubt has its place. But how to bring the awareness to truth beyond this gross measurement system or to the limitations of what we consider true? But if even one is not able to acknowledge where even science is showing a decline in effectiveness... acknowledgement of anything other may be far away to those as well. Thanks for your article:)

Yes, yes, yes! Bravo!!!
I will share this. As a nonscientist personality, yet being a daughter of an accomplished scientist, I have a great respect for science & the profession. This entire world of the present pharmaceutical drug industry, on a gut level feels, "off", & now w/ a recent article in the NY Times, only the other day, putting forth valuable info. regarding the psych./medical profession, it's nothing more than cringe worthy. The lack of quality care, on the other side of the gurney, seems to never be brought forth until the prescribing individual too, becomes victim, either themselves, or a loved one. The article I mention, has a bit of "greed" attached to the motivating force behind some of the choices presented to the person who was interviewed.
Thank u* Deepak, for continuing to be a level & most honest voice.
I invite u* to visit me at my blog [thepeacegarden.blogspot.com], I had worked in the nursing profession for fourty plus years, & I too have seen unbelivable contradictions in the science of medicine.

w/ love & peace always,
Mother Lightning
