It seems we live in an age of blame. In some ways the modern situation is not all that different from the ancient witch hunts. I think the world could be markedly improved if we all took these words to heart.

Rationally, however, when things are not going well, one wants to know why? What is responsible? One needs a model that makes the suffering acceptable. For me, the idea that suffering is good has never made sense. And if I can point to events that preceded the suffering, it is logical to “blame” the person or thing “responsible.” The model that works best for me is that our experiences are part of a dream. Our true identity is the dreamer, so ultimately we are unharmed. But we still have to accept that some dreams are more enjoyable than others.
